SWA Party Canceled

Hey everyone,
Unfortunetly this snow isn't letting up so to be on the safe side we are cancelling the SWA dinner tonight at Tower Inn.  More than anything we just wanted to thank everyone for their work and dedication over the past semester.  I hope everyone has a wonderful break and gets to relax a little.

Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,
Richard Shafer

SWA Holiday Party

Hey everyone,

We have made reservations for SWA to have a dinner together at Tower Inn on Thursday December 15th at 7:30.   Non-members are welcome as well.  We hope as many of you as possible can come and unwind with us as we not only celebrate the upcoming holidays but also the end of another tough semester.  Bring family or friends as we discuss plans for next semester and more importantly relax a little.  Thanks to our members who have worked hard to make SWA a reality.
Sincerely,
Richard Shafer

14 Malignant Companies and Why They Would Make Dr. Evil Blush

Alter.net post a informative story about The 14 Worst Corporate Evildoers that included some of SWA member's favorite topics.

Wal-Mart
Many people have heard of the way that Wal-Mart steamrolls its way into every possible town, destroying local supermarkets and countless small businesses. We have also heard about Wal-Mart's long track record of worker abuse, from forced overtime to sex discrimination to illegal child labor to relentless union busting. Wal-Mart also notoriously fails to provide health insurance to over half of its employees, who are then left to rely on themselves or taxpayers, who provide for a portion of their healthcare needs through government Medicaid.

Less well known is the fact that Wal-Mart maintains its low price level by allowing substandard labor conditions at the overseas factories producing most of its goods. The company continually demands lower prices from its suppliers, who, in turn, make more outrageous and abusive demands on their workers in order to meet Wal-Mart's requirements.

Coca-Cola
Between 1989 and 2002, eight union leaders from Coca-Cola bottling plants in Colombia were killed after protesting the company's labor practices. Hundreds of other Coca-Cola workers who have joined or considered joining the Colombian union SINALTRAINAL have been kidnapped, tortured, and detained by paramilitaries who are hired to intimidate workers to prevent them from unionizing.

Coca-Cola is also one of the most discriminatory employers in the world. In the year 2000, 2,000 African-American employees in the U.S. sued the company for race-based disparities in pay and promotions.

The following is from Student Judicial Services:

Domestic Violence Awareness

Dear BSW and MSW students and faculty:

As part of our SWRK 388 Pre-Professional Social Work Practicum fall semester project we are promoting awareness for domestic violence during the month of October. This is not a solicitation letter, however your support around campus, and in your personal life, is perfectly welcome and appreciated.

Specifically we are working with First Step. First Step is a 43-bed shelter for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. First Step serves mainly Western Wayne County, however survivors are taken on a first come first served basis, and can be from any city or state. First Step also provides counseling, a 24 help line, and a First Response Program (for survivors of sexual assault), at a safe and unpublished location.

The goal of this email is to inform students about domestic violence. First Step defines domestic violence as:

  • A pattern of behaviors including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse used to gain control over another.

Domestic Violence Facts

  • Domestic violence affects 1 in 4 people, regardless of ethnicity, race, age, ability, class, religion, or sexual orientation.
  • Every 15 seconds a woman is battered
  • If you or anyone you know is in need of a safe place, or even a person to talk to about domestic violence please do not hesitate to call First Step’s 24 hour help line: 734-459-5900 or toll free: 1-888-453-5900.

You may notice students and faculty wearing a purple ribbon around campus this month. This ribbon acknowledges October as domestic violence awareness month. Please wear a purple ribbon during the month of October and help us promote awareness around domestic violence, and more specifically to:

  • Mourn those who have died as a result of domestic violence
  • Celebrate survivors
  • Honor the changes achieved thus far
  • Recognize you personal commitment to non-violence

Where can I get a purple ribbon?

You can get a free purple ribbon from booths that will be set up at the EMU Eateries during the month of October. Dates and times are as follows.

Thursday October 27, 2:30-5:00

Watch for announcements in your social work classes for dates and times or contact us via email at dvinfoemu@yahoo.com for general information regarding our project.

Please join us along with First Step in campaigning against domestic violence and wear a purple ribbon during the month of October.

Thank you for your support.

Hero and Civil Rights Pioneer Rosa Parks Dead at 92

On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Parks refused to obey a public bus driver's orders to move to the back of the bus to make extra seats for whites. Rosa was tired of being treated as a second-class citizen and held her ground. She was arrested, tried, and convicted for disorderly conduct as well as for violating a local ordinance.
The very next night, 50 leaders of the African American community, headed by relatively unknown minister Martin Luther King, Jr. gathered to discuss the proper actions to be taken after Mrs. Parks' arrest. What ensued next was the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The entire black community boycotted public buses for 381 days. Dozens of public buses stood idle for months until the law legalizing segregation in public buses was lifted. This event helped spark many other protests against segregation. Through her role in initiating this boycott, Rosa Parks helped make other Americans aware of the civil rights struggle.
In 1956 Parks's case ultimately resulted in United States Supreme Court's ruling that segregated bus service was unconstitutional. (Taken from wikipedia)
