Domestic Violence Awareness

Dear BSW and MSW students and faculty:

 As part of our SWRK 388 Pre-Professional Social Work Practicum fall semester project we are promoting awareness for domestic violence during the month of October. This is not a solicitation letter, however your support around campus, and in your personal life, is perfectly welcome and appreciated.

 Specifically we are working with First Step. First Step is a 43-bed shelter for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. First Step serves mainly Western Wayne County, however survivors are taken on a first come first served basis, and can be from any city or state. First Step also provides counseling, a 24 help line, and a First Response Program (for survivors of sexual assault), at a safe and unpublished location.

 

The goal of this email is to inform students about domestic violence. First Step defines domestic violence as:

• A pattern of behaviors including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse used to gain control over another.

Domestic Violence Facts

• Domestic violence affects 1 in 4 people, regardless of ethnicity, race, age, ability, class, religion, or sexual orientation.
• Every 15 seconds a woman is battered
• If you or anyone you know is in need of a safe place, or even a person to talk to about domestic violence please do not hesitate to call First Step’s 24 hour help line: 734-459-5900 or toll free: 1-888-453-5900. 

You may notice students and faculty wearing a purple ribbon around campus this month. This ribbon acknowledges October as domestic violence awareness month. Please wear a purple ribbon during the month of October and help us promote awareness around domestic violence, and more specifically to:

• Mourn those who have died as a result of domestic violence
• Celebrate survivors
• Honor the changes achieved thus far
• Recognize you personal commitment to non-violence

Where can I get a purple ribbon?

 You can get a free purple ribbon from booths that will be set up at the EMU Eateries during the month of October. Dates and times are as follows.

Thursday October 27, 2:30-5:00
